A day where getting out of the house was much needed

A day when getting out of the house was much needed. Decided on a whim to see if I can find the Split Rock Furnace that I never saw. With leafless trees I knew that it wouldn't be an issue finding it once on the right trail. After making a wrong turn for not using my GPS, I found it without any problems and it was easily accessible.

The Split Rock Furnace was built in 1862 by Andrew B. Cobb. The 32 foot - Just less than 10 meters high charcoal filled stone furnace was constructed to smelt Magnetite Ore needed for the Civil War.

This was the last of its kind build in New Jersey, representing the end of the era of charcoal furnaces. Watch this video to find out more about this historical furnace.
